Classroom Orchestra Suitable for : KS 1 + 2 Where : School When : One term - one year Group size : 30 max In this unit, children learn to play tuned and various percussion instruments in a class performance group, and develop their singing ability. They sing, create and perform rhythmic and melodic material, and perform as a musical ensemble. At the heart of the unit is the percussion orchestra associated with the composer and educator, Carl Orff. Singing, and mastering Orff instruments, represents a solid foundation for developing children’s sound basic percussion techniques, pitch development and musical awareness. Crucially, performing within the Orff group develops the skills and attitudes essential to successful membership of musical ensembles. In participating schools, the class teacher learns alongside the children and facilitates their practise during the week, with the assistance of online and CD Rom based interactive materials.
