Sing for the Love of It – Millom – featuring schools; Thwaites Community Primary, Broughton in Furness C of E, Waberthwaite, Capt Shaws, St James Catholic Primary, Haverigg, Millom Secondary, Black Combe Junior, Millom Infants.

At Black Combe Junior School on Wednesday 16th February, specially selected representatives from 9 local schools arrived to sing together for the first time. They are the founding members of the new Millom Schools Partnership Transition Choir fronted by Ruth Cullen from Millom School. Comprised of 100 children, they had chosen a core of songs to share together that afternoon and what a glorious sound they made! The young people from Millom School (including the four Young Vocal Leaders on the county programme) pulled off a lustrous descant to Lyn Marsh’s Believe and the whole experience of such beautiful harmony left all the children and teachers really inspired for what they will achieve together in the future. Sing Up t-shirts topped the whole event off and made everyone feel very special.

The event and the whole initiative for the transition choir project was put together by Ruth Cullen. She had been inspired by her experiences in New Zealand where a great many schools would come together over several days to perform and sing. The schools would learn a different harmony or part to a companion song and then put the whole piece together under a professional choral director. The results were always really moving and Ruth wanted to bring this experience to the cluster of schools she works in. Ruth is really excited by the results of Wednesday’s sing and is looking forward to the first proper rehearsal at St James’ and to the future where she envisages the choir singing further afield. All head teachers were proud of this venture and are pleased to have Millom School supporting the foundation of their new choir.

Child from Black Combe Junior School “That was the best singing ever. That last song [Believe] was just amazing”.

Teacher from Millom School “Wow, we learned that only a couple of weeks ago. I feel quite emotional listening to it, they’ve done incredibly well”.
