What is it?

A one-year in-school programme with a professional singer working in partnership with class teachers

Who is it for? (target group, numbers, previous experience)

It’s for the whole school community and most of all the children. Whether you are singing a lot or only just beginning to explore, we can tailor a programme to suit your needs. We believe in the power of singing as a tool for learning and personal and social development. There is flexibility in the programme to allocate time to class groups, the whole school, teacher training, choirs and community outreach activities as meets individual circumstances

What’s the benefit?

Promote a passion for singing in your school and embed creative approaches to teaching. Create a music curriculum that develops well-rounded musicianship through movement and physical expression. Realise the potential of singing to assist learning in all areas of the curriculum and engage the wider community. Enjoy seeing your students develop confidence, concentration and interpersonal skills through involvement in high quality music-making activities led by your staff.

Availability (where and when)

Once a week or once a fortnight in your school

Who will deliver it?

Sarah Wall, a first class music graduate following study at The Royal Northern College of Music and The University of Manchester currently pursuing the 2 year certificate in Dalcroze.

How much will it cost?

The Sage Gateshead’s Vocal Union package can be purchased through SoundWave for £1250 (2009/10 price). The Wider Opportunities package is also available free of charge (for the first year only) from the Cumbria Music Service or a bespoke annual package can be created by Sarah directly at a cost of around £1500-£2000

Where could it lead?

End of year performances in school and with other schools involved in SoundWave’s programme. Achievement of a Sing Up Award at Silver, Gold or Platinum level.

Long term, bringing singing into the centre of your school’s life will help to secure a place for the arts in Cumbria and increase its value in the community. Singing provides a way in to all the performing arts and will help to foster a lifelong love of music.
